Unbelievable, Netflix’s Latest Crime Drama, Is Based On A Truly Unbelievable True Story
It’s probably true, folks: Netflix is producing more shows than we can watch. While crime dramas, procedurals and true-crime documentaries have been their forte over the last few years with shows like Mindhunter, The Ted Bundy Tapes and The Sinner gaining popularity amongst audiences. The genre seems to be growing and how and their latest show Unbelievable is not about murder like most of these shows are but takes a look at rape.

Unbelievable takes a look at a real-life event which can only be described as unbelievable. Based on a Pulitzer prize winning article, the trailer of the show is sure to send a chill down your spine. A teenager (Kaitlyn Dever) reports being raped at her home by a masked intruder. However, the police and even her closed ones are suspicious about the credibility of her account and eventually, the case is recanted.

Meanwhile, far away, two detectives (Toni Colette and Merritt Weaver) are investigating and find similarities between two different rape cases. They join hands to track down the person responsible, believed to be a serial rapist. With the help of another victim and evidence, they are led back to the first recanted rape. The trailer ends on a haunting note with the line “people believe the truth only when it’s convenient”

We all know that rape is a tricky subject and must be dealt with very sensitively. An earlier show that did it exceedingly well was the Australian crime show, Broadchurch, in its third season. Closer to home, Netflix’s Delhi Crime is about the rape that shocked the entire nation. Rape is a societal evil and is as heinous a crime as murder and with shows like Unbelievable telling these true, important stories, we can only hope that it manages to bring about change – whether it is in preventing these crimes or even showing more empathy towards victims.

Unbelievable is now streaming on Netflix.
